The new package of measures includes offering vacant space for community use and converting the current vehicle fleet to electric vehicles.
NHS Property Services (NHSPS) today released a three-year "Green Plan" to help the NHS achieve its goal of zero emissions by 2040 and mitigate the effects of climate change.
This unique plan is part of the broader NHSPS program, "Delivering a Greener NHS," and will see the property manager of 3,000 NHS buildings deploy a range of green technologies, such as heat pumps and solar panels, to generate electricity and heat for the buildings and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
A package of goals and actions detailed in the three-year plan includes new long-term sustainable care models, a flagship social prescribing program, and plans to convert vacant and underutilized space on NHS campuses into affordable or accessible facilities for community groups.
The NHS will also convert service and leased vehicles to ultra-low emission vehicles and develop a new electric vehicle strategy that includes a map of charging stations and a comprehensive plan to convert the entire fleet to zero-emission models.
In addition, NHSPS will begin feasibility studies to decarbonize all old gas or oil heating systems and introduce a calculation tool that incorporates carbon emissions into financial calculations to help regional teams access capital for energy and environmental projects in their regions. "This means many more projects than ever can be done simultaneously across the building complex," NHSPS said.
"The relationships between our health and our environment are inherently interconnected. It is critical that the values of sustainability are embedded in everything NHS does so that together we can improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve," said Cameron Hawkins, director of energy and environment for NHSPS. "We have already made tremendous progress in decarbonizing the NHS Estate, and this bold, ambitious green plan will build on those successes and take our ambitions for a greener NHS to the next level. As the owner of much of the NHS estate, we are uniquely positioned to contribute significantly to NHS England's net-zero targets for 2040."
In summary
More and more national institutions are starting to become carbon-free, thus reducing harmful emissions released into our atmosphere and harming the planet for future generations. This shows us at E2 energy the importance of such initiatives and gives us the motivation to continue developing green environmental projects to sustain our planet.
